This book is of very limited use. It has no listed sources, and that's probably because it wasn't researched at all, just a collection of all-too common sense spilled onto the page.Some of the sections that caused me to raise my eyebrows:
-Of the only seven mentions of other sources of information in the entire book, one is [...], which is a (now inactive) spoof site meant to sign people up for expensive credit monitoring services by impersonating the government-sponsored site, [...]. Incredibly lazy.
-The author also highlights four generic websites for searching for apartments, but doesn't give any indication of what distinguishes them, from each other or the broader field. (Sample text: "One of the best features is its search criteria. You can specify just what you are looking for and it will find properties in the area you select that match what you are looking for." Awesome!) Seems pretty likely that these were just the top hits on a quick Google search. There is also no mention of Craigslist, the 800-pound gorilla of online listings, which is just unforgivable.
-In the section for disputes with landlords, this is the total extent of advice: "In [hazardous] situations the renter should contact the Department of Housing to determine the proper course of action to take in this situation." Really? Don't take detailed written records of the situation? Don't conduct all of your communication with the landlord via certified mail? Don't reach out to any local tenant associations or attorneys? OK, I'll just call the "Department of Housing", because that's always the name in every city and I'm sure they'll all be super-helpful and available.
-Similarly, this is the treatment of tenants rights: "[I]t is your right to read through the contract at length before agreeing to the stipulations within it. You also should have the right to walk away." Come on, even in Kentucky there must be SOME rights granted to tenants by statute, over and above what's in a contract. But you wouldn't know that from reading this book...
-The final chapter of the book is a two-page(!) discussion of "rental agency services", which you might know as brokers. The treatment is just as surface-level as the other chapters, but is so incredibly short that it amazes me that it was included at all.
-In describing the benefits of renting versus buying, there is no mention of the superior flexibility of renting. This is one of the most important advantages to renting; how can you miss this?
-Suggests that you make sure the apartment is near the freeway, but totally neglects public transportation, a major concern for renters in larger cities.
-Talks about the possibility of storage of furniture and belongings, but doesn't give any figures on how much that might cost, or recommendations on where to go to inquire about these services.
-No discussion of the moving process

This is a fantastic resource to guide you on the renting process. With real estate on a limb nowadays, most homeowners do take advantage. So, it's great that this book is very complete in the basic information.
Looks detailed and useful, and the official (bookish) style is funny, but some proofreading and making headings look like headings wouldn't hurt.
